Double Page Spread Design
This is a design of what my double page spread will look like. My questionnaire results have influenced the double page spread, as I had to make a design that the target audience would like (such as big pictures), therefore I took this into account and used a big picture. Also, I found out using my questionnaire that readers don't tend to like to read lots of text. So I decided to split the text up, and make it more interesting for the reader, such as there will be a paragraph about the music artist, questions for the artist and also questions from the fans about what they want to find about him/her. Therefore even though there is still text, it is not all about the same thing, which should hopefully make it more interesting.

Photo-shoot Storyboard
I have needed to plan my photo-shoot, in order to get some ideas of what looks best and what I prefer, so when the time comes to actually take the photos I will be able to use this storyboard.
I will be taking more than six pictures, however I just drew six in order to get a rough idea of what background I like, what type of shot looks best and what props I should use (such as guitars, microphones e.t.c).
Shot 1, 2 and 3 are all shot at a music studio. I feel that a music studio would be a good place to take photos as my music magazine is all about new metal bands, so if they are in a studio then it looks as if they are just starting out as a new band.
Shot 4 is shot outside, possibly next to woods, in order to get a variety of pictures and see if it will look good or not.
Shot 5 and 6 are based on a stage. I also feel that this is a good place for my pictures to be taken because if the character/characters are on a stage then the picture may look a lot more appealing for the audience, and if the room is dark with the stage lights on then it will fit in with the type of music I am doing.

Risk Assessment - Music Studio
A risk assessment is required before photo-shooting, so the area is safe. This will minimalise the risk of injuries. In a music studio there are numerous amps and leads lying around, so these could cause to be a hazard. This is why a risk assessment is needed.

Questionnaire - Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
One of the advantages with a questionnaire is that it does not take long to make. Whats great is about this is that once it has been finished and dished out to the target audience, it allows me to be getting on with other work, therefore saving time. Another advantage is that most of the questions are mixed answer questions, so the reader can circle answers which i have put on there to make it easier for me to evaluate, and to avoid bias results. This makes producing graphs a lot easier, and again saves time.
Disadvantages
One of the problems with questionnaires are that if some of the target audience are grouped together, then they might all have the same answers as they will confer with each other. This means my results would not be reliable, which would mean I could not use them to help construct my music magazine.
My results will help me to influence my design choices because I can find out what the most popular answers are to my questions. This means I will be able to find out what people prefer, so when I include this in my magazine people will prefer it.

Customer Profile
My music magazine will be based on modern metal. This is a medium that primarily targets males between the ages of 14 and 25, but I would like it to appeal to females as well within this age bracket, therefore i can keep this in mind when it comes to colours and pictures for my music magazine.
This is Dave. He is 20, and loves finding out about new metal bands as they inspire him, and he likes to help and support them along the way. Dave likes his personal image and stands up for it, in times of meeting people with musical differences. He attends many gigs as he enjoys the sound of live music, and would like his magazine to promote new bands, to get them known and tell the people how talented these young band members can really be.

Comparing Two Different Music Magazines

The two music magazines ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘Q’ are very different in many ways. One reason is that they appeal to different music audiences. This is because people who read Kerrang! like music genres such as rock and metal as Kerrang! only writes about those sorts of bands, whereas Q writes about many different bands which range in genres, for example Metallica to Eminem. Therefore they attract many different people, especially Q.
The designs of the two magazines are very different. Kerrang! uses lots of different fonts to make the text stand out to attract the reader’s eye. This is different to Q because they use simple fonts. This is because the readers of Q are generally more mature than the readers of Kerrang!, because Kerrang! generally attract people who are younger such as teenagers, as well as adults. The text on Q does not overcrowd the front cover, as the readers are mature enough to not be force fed the words, which is very different to Kerrang! as the text is snappy and different so it stands out to the younger generation.
The colours used in both of the magazines are very different from each other as well. Kerrang! often uses a dark background to make everything else stand out, whereas Q uses a mature colour background like gold and white. Gold will attract different people as gold can be associated with wealth, and wealthy people are older. The text colours are very different from each other as well. Kerrang! use different colours for their text as you can see from the front cover. This is so each bit of writing stands out from each other, therefore the reader will read it all and will want to carry on to read as it is eye catching.
Even simple writing such as this which is just explaining the sub-title is eye catching as it has got its own background. Therefore Kerrang! make their front cover as attractive to its target audience as it can be to make them carry on reading. However, the text in the front cover of the magazine Q very different. This is because a lot of the time they just use white, which is a simple colour to once again separate the generations and stand out to a different audience. Some of the text, however only a little bit, is in red because the background which their logo ‘Q’ rests on is red, so the red text reminds people what they are reading and therefore promotes Q. The layout of the front cover of the two magazines can be compared as well. The magazines are similar in the fact that they both show the music artist on the front cover. This is because this tells the reader what the main focus of the magazine will be about in the issue, therefore if the reader is interested in the band or artist being advertised then they will by the magazine. Both of the magazines are also similar because the artist on the front cover is very large on the page, and they often cover a bit of the writing, as well as having writing over the top of the band or artist. The reason the magazines do this is because it once again gets across the message that the magazine will be focused on the artist shown, and also it is very eye catching for the reader. The artists are usually posed in such a way that it is eye catching as well e.g. on the front cover of Q above the man is pointing towards the reader.

School Magazine Evaluation
Our magazine front cover is very eye catching. This is because the colours we use are very bright, so it attracts the reader's eye. The brightest colour is the flame from the bunsen burner, and we enhanced it slightly to make it even more bright to the eye. The flame also gets across the message that the magazine is about science. The text also stands out from the background because it is placed on whitespace, therefore the reader can easily see it and can then read it easier. For the title we made it multi-coloured on a white background. The multi-colours stand out from the white so the reader will probably be attracted to the title first, which is good because they will learn what the magazine is about before they read any of the other text. For the text explaining featured articles we put a shadow behind it so it once again stands out from the background and the eye gets attracted to it. We used a blue background because a lot of backgrounds are either black and white
We want the reader to read on and get involved with our magazine. To achieve this we made the text interesting, for example 'Win £500 in todays issue'. This will make the reader on because most people will be interested in winning £500. We want the reader to be persuaded by our magazine by the use of text. The text does this as it engages the reader because it gets them involved with the magazine.
The text is also quite memorable because the reader will think that if you can win £500 in this issue, then you might be able to win more money or something different in another issue. This will make them come back the the magazine, and possibly read each issue. We also added 'Win a trip to science world' which is memorable because if they are reading a science magazine then it is the kind of prize the reader would like to win otherwise they wouldn't be reading a magazine about science. This will make the reader come back for more.
If we were to improve our magazine then we would compare it to other magazines to make sure it is not too boring, or just needs to be improved. We would also show pupils our front cover and ask if they would buy it and what improvements we could make to make it more appealing to their eyes.

Preliminary task
Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

What is Media?
Web 2.0 is being used as an example of the World Wide Web developing. It is an example of second generation wed-based communities. Some examples are social networking sites, weblogs, wikis and podcasts.
Mediation
It is the process where a media text represents an idea, event or issue to us. It is a useful word because it suggests the way in which things undergo change in the process of being acted upon by the media.
Proliferation
It is the rise, increase or growth of something.
Saturation
It is the constant bombardment of media. This could be TV, radio magazines etc.
'The Media' refers to the various methods of communication such as TV, newspapers, internet etc.
Media products are shared. This means that they become part of our common culture. For instance, everyone has heard the phrase 'Phone a friend' even if they dont watch 'Who wants to be a millionaire'. This is because phrases such as these have become part of our daily vocabulary.
Media is very strictly regulated in countries such as Burma, China and Ethiopia. This is because the media is very powerful and can spread, especially over the internet. This means the government will want to control it, as people can spread and share their ideas.
Media convergence is where numerous platforms of media are coming together. One example is video, as it used to just be available on tape, but know you can watch it on the internet.
The media is important in today's society because we can gather a lot of information from it, such as what is happening in the world around us. The media is also spreading, so it is part of our lives as we use it all the time.
