What is Media?

Web 2.0 is being used as an example of the World Wide Web developing. It is an example of second generation wed-based communities. Some examples are social networking sites, weblogs, wikis and podcasts.

Mediation
It is the process where a media text represents an idea, event or issue to us. It is a useful word because it suggests the way in which things undergo change in the process of being acted upon by the media.

Proliferation
It is the rise, increase or growth of something.

Saturation
It is the constant bombardment of media. This could be TV, radio magazines etc.

'The Media' refers to the various methods of communication such as TV, newspapers, internet etc.

Media products are shared. This means that they become part of our common culture. For instance, everyone has heard the phrase 'Phone a friend' even if they dont watch 'Who wants to be a millionaire'. This is because phrases such as these have become part of our daily vocabulary.

Media is very strictly regulated in countries such as Burma, China and Ethiopia. This is because the media is very powerful and can spread, especially over the internet. This means the government will want to control it, as people can spread and share their ideas.

Media convergence is where numerous platforms of media are coming together. One example is video, as it used to just be available on tape, but know you can watch it on the internet.

The media is important in today's society because we can gather a lot of information from it, such as what is happening in the world around us. The media is also spreading, so it is part of our lives as we use it all the time.
